Biologists don't like to say that life or the universe has a goal, that there is foresight (which refers to the term teleology). In fact there isn't. Nevertheless we know that all living beings want to survive, that seems to be their goal. You will see it in their behavior, you can tell it from the fact that they eat and reproduce.
It is the same with the birds wings. We know they serve to fly with, but all they do is flapping. The result is a flying bird, and that is why we say that wings serve to fly which implies a goal, but wings do not have a goal, they flap.

Sorry for not answering your comment as precisely as you wanted, but I don't know what to say about programmed cell death. I guess this process is always going on in a body to get rid of old cells. But they are replaced by new cells to keep the organism healthy. It might be that during apoptosis cells are not replaced as they should in older organisms. Death follows but only after a struggle to survive. You are right, we don’t seem to understand ...Gert,

You are right, we don’t seem to understand each other. The bacteria are just an exemple. They will not eat until they burst but they eat until they divide. Daughter cells will eat again as much as there is available, they follow an increasing gradient of sugar concentration, and will divide.

My idea is that teleonomy, although it is a property of life, is present also on the scale of macromolecules. The molecular switches work only in one sense (the ligand induces conformation-shift after which there will be some form of labour like transport against a gradient or formation of secondary messengers as GMPc) and as such these switches form the “Life’s Ratchet” (title of a very interesting book by Peter Hoffmann that talks mainly of molecular machines as kinesins and myosins). The molecular switches create gradients and create order out of chaos. They are not directed by anything apart from their bond with the ligand. This mechanism stands at the base of goal-directedness, it is a property of life that depends on molecular switches, in my view.

Monod uses the term quite often and also as a base for his definition of life. Monod is maybe not the inventor of the term, but he adopted it completely.

Your link is very interesting. Thank you very much.
Marleenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01404234060103026188noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1573515308501896849.post-32736227324561296502018-08-07T09:31:08.824+02:002018-08-07T09:31:08.824+02:00Marleen, I am afraid we don't understand each ...Marleen, I am afraid we don't understand each other. So, you need some negative feedback circuit. But that destroys the concept "will always move towards".

By the way the concept of 'teleonomy' was introduced by Colin S. Pittendrigh (1918 - 1996) in Chapter 8 of Behavior and Evolution, Yale University Press, 1958). bron: Nature, 2 may 1996.

So the author of the book should not try to do that. It is not metaphysical. It is very solid and real. Please reread my first comment on this blog.
Teleonomy is about the goal-directedness of all living beings. A bacterium that thrives in light and/or sugar will always move towards points where there is light and/or sugar. That is it’s “will to survive” which ultimately can be seen as a “will to reproduce” and hence they are the same thing (at least in the case of bacteria).
Marleenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01404234060103026188noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1573515308501896849.post-31225822160542773782018-08-06T11:23:37.195+02:002018-08-06T11:23:37.195+02:00Marleen wrote "So the author of this book pre...Marleen wrote "So the author of this book pretends to write about something new while the concept is almost fifty years old."
Aha, that is what you want to say! Okay.

However, at its best, the concept "will to survive" is secondary: first life consisted of replicating molecules and molecules do not have a "will to survive"! Molecules do not live and cannot die. Molecules can self-replicate, and after a long evolutionary process when they have become cells, they show a property that could be called 'will to survive'. Maybe stability is better concept!?

Marleen, please note that the concept "will to survive" is ridiculed by Karo M. as being metaphysical and he replaces it by "will to produce entropy" which is just as metaphysical. Please read the above blog carefully. It is a summary.

in general, the concept of "will to survive" it is not very specific, it does not say anything about causes. It fails at Programmed cell death or Apoptosis: self-destruction of cells in the body.
It does not explain cases where the will to survive is not successful: why there is cancer in the body, deadly virus infections.
Finally, the will to survive fails miserably in the ageing organism and with the dead of the organism.
If every individual wants to survive as long as possible, then why do not all individuals and species get very very very old? why are there such great differences in life expectancy between species?
I think therefore that the concept "will to survive" is unfalsifiable: nothing can refute it.

Not to mention that you need to add:
a) will to reproduce
b) will to have sex with the opposite sex,
c: will to have sex with the same sex,
because these 'wills' have nothing to do with "will to survive".

So you need another explanatory framework to explain all these kind of things.
gert korthofhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02176669976311883850noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1573515308501896849.post-79498522403409714612018-08-05T17:11:20.935+02:002018-08-05T17:11:20.935+02:00Gert, teleonomy was derived from teleology and app...Gert, teleonomy was derived from teleology and applies only to living beings. This thread contains a lot of comment...Hello Gert,

This thread contains a lot of comments and it might be that my comment will be similar to one of the comments above.
Anyway, what I am surprised about is that there seem to be no references neither in your blogpost nor in the book you are discussing to the concept of teleonomy. The term is “old” but not that old and was used by Monod (1970) and Mayr (1974) to indicate the goal-directedness of all living beings. In the view of Monod, responsible for this property of life are the proteic macromolecules.
To illustrate this one might think of the proteic switches: as soon as they find there ligand they change conformation. This change of conformation causes a process that goes against entropy (there might be some form of labour) after which the ligand is released and the protein takes its original shape, ready for a second round. This is an illustration of the working of proteic switches of which there are machine-like equivalents in informatics. This property is extended to cells, organs and organisms that hence have teleonomic properties.

En je voorbeeld versterkt mijn vraag ook alleen maar: Je citeert: "the researchers found that the regenerative cells can be distinguished by high expression of a gene called tspan-1. "

Bijv via "rules" [that] are governed by architecture imparting sequences (AIMS), which are in all bacterial chromosomes.
