DNA 70th Anniversary: 25 April 1953 - 25 April 2023

The famous 1953 paper of Watson and Crick in Nature:
We wish to suggest a structure for the salt of deoxyribose nucleic acid (D.N.A.)

Did Nature forget about its most famous scientific publication of all times? I could not find it on the Nature website today: the 70th Anniversary of the discovery of the structure of DNA! 

The discovery of Watson and Crick lay the foundation not only of molecular genetics and molecular biology, but of biology and evolution in general.

This morning I discovered a paper dated 25 April in Nature by Matthew Cobb and Nathaniel Comfort: What Rosalind Franklin truly contributed to the discovery of DNA’s structure, but when I checked Nature website on 25 April and I found nothing about DNA!

Further, I discovered a Nature editorial dated 25 April 2023:

Zo kijkt Frans de Waal naar mens en dier. VPRO Tegenlicht. Ik snap het niet.

Vanavond, donderdag 20 april 2023, is er een docu 'Stem van de natuur' op tv van VPRO Tegenlicht over 'het innerlijk leven' van dieren, of ze pijn en plezier kunnen ervaren, en mogelijk over bewustzijn beschikken, hoe dieren communiceren, enz.  

"Het reduceren van de bio-industrie
lijkt me het meest logische."

Een bijbehorend interview, dat niet in de uitzending zit maar wel op youtube te zien is, is met Frans de Waal. De Waal is een internationaal bekend diergedrag onderzoeker en auteur van vele boeken o.a. 'Age of Empathy' ('Een Tijd voor Empathie') en presenteert zichzelf steeds als iemand die het altijd voor dieren opneemt, maar weinigen weten dat hij gewoon vlees blijft eten!

zonder dat er dieren aan te pas komen."

"Dus het gekweekte vlees enzovoorts.
Ik hoop dat we dat punt ooit bereiken."

In het nieuwste interview vertelt hij dat hij tegen de bio-industrie is omdat het slecht gesteld is met het welzijn van dieren (varkens). Hij wil graag kweekvlees. Maar waarom wacht hij tot dat kweekvlees op de markt komt? Dat zal nog wel een tijdje duren voordat dit in de supermarkt ligt. Ondertussen gaat hij door met vlees eten. Waarom is hij niet lang geleden gestopt met vlees eten? Ik snap het niet. Er zijn meer dan genoeg goede vleesvervangers op de markt. Daar kan het toch niet aan liggen? Hij weet als geen ander dat dieren pijn kunnen ervaren. Waarom is hij geen vegetariër of veganist?

"Ikzelf kijk daarnaar op een andere manier.
Ik kijk ook naar het welzijn van de dieren."

Hij zegt nergens dat hij gestopt is met het eten van vlees. Als hij vegetariër of veganist zou zijn, had hij dat zeker wel gezegd. Om het goede voorbeeld te geven. En om anderen aan te moedigen. En in het belang van de dieren.

"Maar in feite is hij vriend van alle dieren!" (voice over).

How I discovered the Pleiades constellation

I know Orion and Ursa Major (Great Bear), but that's about it. Today I discovered the Pleiades, also known as The Seven Sisters, because they happened to be close to Venus!

I found them with my binoculars. But in a clear sky they can also be spotted with the naked eye. They stand out because they are bright stars close together in a small group. They look a little bit like the Great Bear. When I first spotted the group I didn't know the name. After consulting a few star maps and checking out the relative positions of the stars I decided they must be the Pleiades. I got the names of the individual stars from Wikipedia and added them to the picture above. My picture appears as if rotated about 60 degrees clockwise relative to the Wikipedia Pleiades. I guess it must be explained by the time of observation.

If they are so easy to recognize, why didn't I know the Pleiades? I discovered them because they happened to be close to Venus! (at this time of the year). And Venus is a mighty bright 'star' in the western sky. That's how I discovered the Pleiades! The Pleiades have been  known to humanity for thousands of years. That makes them special.

The day before, 12 April 2023, the weather was cloudy and the effect was that only the brightest stars were visible. Paradoxically, that makes it easier to identify the constellation. 

It is also nice to see that Venus is many times larger than the stars of the Pleiades. Venus is about the size of our Earth. On my picture the bright stars are about 8 pixels wide and Venus 65 pixels. So with this magnification Venus really is captured as a disc, not a dot. Of course these are amateurish pictures. However, they show that astrophotography can be fun without professional astronomical equipment.
